J. Scott Crossen
Meet Scott
Scott began journaling when he was old enough to hold a pen. He has a natural skill for writing, and in his first book, Later, I Learned: A Journey Through Life with Diabetes, he provides true gripping accounts of his life with insight, sensitivity, grit, humor, and a poetic touch. His memoir delivers fascinating stories that reveal the impact of both short and long-term diabetes complications and the elusive search for a cure.
He has lived in Colorado for over 50 years but was born in the mid-west, where he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1971. As of 2025, he is without secondary complications, but his life was spent battling the short-term impact of hypoglycemia. His memoir delivers multiple accounts of experiencing wide blood-sugar swings, and the consequences of severe hypoglycemia.
Aside from writing, Scott is an accomplished athlete who has competed in and trained others in many sports, including racketball, volleyball, boxing, self-defense, and physical fitness. He has worked with troubled teens since 1990 and started a teen suicide prevention program where he lives. Beyond writing and helping teens, his passion is music. He sings, writes music, plays guitar, and has professionally recorded. Scott cherishes hiking in the Colorado high country, where he has summited 29 mountains over 14,000 feet in altitude. He cross-country skis and snowshoes, has bicycled alone across the continent multiple times and continues to cycle whenever possible.
Scott’s greatest love is his wife, Gretchen, his pups, his brother, Rod, and his friends, who have been with him through numerous trials and tribulations and are his steadfast supporters.
In 2025, he will release an audio version of Later, I Learned, a book of poetry containing his wife’s photography, and a Later, I Learned sequel, including more engaging accounts of his life and the lessons learned.
